AI and Blockchain Integration for Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI)
This chapter examines how Artificial Intelligence (AI) and blockchain converge in the context of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) within smart grids. It presents theoretical concepts of AI for data analytics and automation, and explains blockchain's potential to create transparent, decentralized, and secure data environments. The discussion explores the synergy between AI-driven intelligence and blockchain-based trust frameworks for managing metering data, demand-side response, energy trading, and anomaly detection. Several use cases demonstrate how AI-led approaches elevate predictive and optimization tasks, while blockchain safeguards meter data integrity and coordinates distributed market transactions. The chapter presents operational, security, and interoperability challenges and emphasizes the scope for future research on standardizing AI–blockchain modules and addressing scalability constraints. Findings highlight the strategic importance of pairing blockchain-based trust with AI-based intelligence for achieving automated, reliable, and consumer-focused AMI.
