An Empirical Analysis of Technology Choices in Standard Setting
This article empirically explores standard-setting organizations' policy orientations toward technology developers. We find that standards are associated with a larger number of firms declaring to own essential patent that are required for implementing the standards as the issuing SSOs' policies become more friendly to developers. In addition, the incidence of standard accreditation, which may serve as a proxy for cooperative relationships between SSOs in standard setting, is also found to be positively related to the number of essential-patent holders
