An Integrated Product Service System Approach for Maintenance Services - a Case Study within the Power Generating Industry
Great business possibilities exist in offering products combined with services using the Product Service System (PSS) logic. Value propositions that combine products and services have been proven more profitable than propositions focusing solely on products or services. Maintenance and other labor-intensive offerings show great potential, but to reach this potential a shift in the mindset of the customer as well as the service provider is necessary. Maintenance should be perceived as an integrated part of the offering and a way to fulfill the core business goals. This paper investigates the business opportunities of maintenance services by applying a structured approach for business model innovation and proposing an integrated PSS approach for maintenance services. The new business opportunities are explored in an in-depth and descriptive case study of an original equipment manufacturer within the power generating industry. Main empirical findings are in the form of identified business opportunities and a business scenario that includes three types of maintenance contracts that take advantage of the maintenance related capabilities of the manufacturer while fulfilling the needs of the customers
