Anni trenta e anni ottanta : Paralleli e Differenze (The 1930s and 1980s: Parallels and Differences)

Dopo la seconda guerra mondiale ci sono stati il regolamento degli aiuti concessi sulla base del Lend-lease, l'istituzione del sistema di Bretton Woods, il prestito alla Gran Bretagna e, infine, il piano Marshall. Riflettendo su quel periodo ho proposto una mia legge delle politiche economiche alternative: dopo un lungo dibattito su quale alternativa scegliere – per esempio, dazi doganali oppure svalutazione del cambio in Inghilterra nel 1930 e 1931, istituzioni internazionali come a Bretton Woods oppure approccio delle valute chiave del prestito alla Gran Bretagna – si finisce spesso per adottare entrambe le alternative (il che rovina la possibilità di usare l'esperimento come “test” di teorie economiche). Not that I intend to bring out the pure pragmatism that is not based on any theory. However, in recent years, I lost part of my admiration, if I ever had much, for ideological or dogmatic approach to economic problems
