Las mujeres latinoamericanas que son madres adolescentes tienen entre 1,8 y 2,8 años menos de educación. Es común pensar en el embarazo como el motivo que precipita la deserción escolar. Pero por qué tantas adolescentes se quedan embarazadas? La respuesta es sorprendente: Investigaciones realizadas por el Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo (BID) sugieren que en muchas ocasiones el embarazo es una vía de escape para las adolescentes. Estas jóvenes, en compleja situación de desventaja, no consideran que la educación pueda alterar su futuro. Así que quedarse embarazada para no ir a la escuela tiene gran sentido. Esta nota recoge los resultados de una investigación cuantitativa y cualitativa sobre el embarazo adolescente y la educación.Abstract: Teen mothers in Latin America complete 1.8 to 2.8 fewer years of education than Latin American women who delay bearing children. Pregnancy is often believed to be the reason why girls drop out of school. But why are so many girls getting pregnant? The answer may surprise you. Research carried out by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) suggests that many of the pregnancies are not accidents. Imagine that you are young, disadvantaged, and cannot see how education will improve your future. Getting pregnant to get out of school makes perfect sense. This note summarizes the results of a quantitative and qualitative investigation into teen pregnancy and education.
