Bargaining for Values : From a Market Economy to a Market Society

This paper addresses the problem of the limits of the negotiable sense of norms and values by challenging one of the models of negotiations, namely the economic one. The main aim of this paper is to gainsay the thesis of the comprehensiveness and universal applicability of the economic approach to all human behavior. To realize this aim, the paper elucidates the problem of the erosion of non-market norms, virtues and values by market reasoning which claims to be value-neutral but is not, by posing the argument from corruption and by analyzing “the crowding out effect”. The analysis follows the way of argumentation developed by Michael Sandel and Michael Walzer
