Baseline study on the training and certification requirements for fishers in EU Member States : final report; Annex B: Member State overview Denmark
Denmark's approach to the training and certification of fishers is regulated and based on the STCW-F Convention. All fishers need to have completed a certain level of training to receive the certificates required to allow them to work on board a Danish flagged seagoing fishing vessel. The absolute minimum requirement applies to the function of deckhand and requires possession of a Medical Fitness certificate and the completion of the commercial fishing safety course, or the Commercial fishing basic course, or completing the introductory subjects in basic maritime training. There are vocational training programmes to become a fisher, and these training programmes are offered at state-controlled schools. In addition to these schools, there are also maritime training institutes offering a range of accredited training courses (STCW and STCW-F courses). Denmark recognises STCW-F certificates issued by other EU Member States that have ratified the Convention, if the applicant also meets the other requirements specified in Danish law.
