Black & Veatch health and safety training is “simply outstanding” : Company gains award for seventh year in succession

Purpose – Describes the health and safety training that has won UK engineering consultancy Black & Veatch an award from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents. Design/methodology/approach – Outlines how training needs are identified, the types of training provided and the groups of workers who receive it. Findings – Demonstrates that health and safety training is a fully integrated element of the Black & Veatch learning and development process, which is considered key to the company's business success. Highlights the importance of development leaders, who act as third‐party representatives of employees’ personal, work and career interests. Underlines the role of the annual appraisal and 90‐day development review. Practical implications – Helps to demonstrate that health and safety training can contribute both to company performance and to the well‐being of individual employees. Originality/value – Provides plenty to interest any HR or training specialist called upon to justify the usefulness of health and safety training.
