External consultants play a special role in helping organisations solve problems. The intervention described was in response to the turmoil occurring within a large telecommunications firm following major organisational restructuring. To prevent a large‐scale loss of high‐potential managers and long‐term supervisors, a firm of consultants was called in. A workshop was designed which would permit participants to identify their strengths as well as their developmental needs. The programme is described, and its successes and shortcomings assessed.
