Chaos and Complexity : The Engine of Growth

This paper embeds a wide-angled overview of the process of change, spanning the evolution of the species to the modern human-centered period. The model is based on the central proposition that change ensues from the supply-demand interaction between disorder and order, chaos and complexity. Disorder and chaos motivate innovation, leading to the emergence of increasingly complex systems – technological, economic, and social. New forms of complexity, in turn, create new platforms for disorder and chaos that result from discordant interactions between the forces of nature, including entropy, human preferences, and bounded rationality. This disequilibriating movement of the economy along a hierarchy of chaos and complexity renders economic agents subject to a Sisyphean challenge of achieving balance between chaos and complexity, thus creating the engine of unending change
