Chapter 3. Sustainable Manufacturing

Our current rate of resource use is alarmingly unsustainable. From 1950 to 2005 alone, metal production skyrocketed by 6 times, oil consumption by 8, and natural gas consumption by a staggering 14-fold. This raises serious concerns about the availability of resources for future generations. While manufacturing has fuelled economic growth, it also comes at a heavy price: resource depletion and environmental pollution. Therefore, minimizing resource consumption and environmental impact are absolutely critical. Sustainable manufacturing ( SM ) provides a powerful solution. It prioritizes cost-effective production methods and components that create minimal waste and environmental harm. This approach aligns perfectly with the core principles of sustainable development, enabling us to meet our present needs without jeopardizing the ability of future generations to meet theirs.
