It involves comparing your organization’s performance metrics against industry leaders (best practices). This comparison pinpoints areas where you fall short and reveals innovative methods employed by high performers. By analysing these successful strategies, you can bridge the gap and elevate your own operations. Benchmarking goes beyond just comparing numbers; it provides a valuable reference point for internal evaluation and a springboard for continuous improvement. The just-in-time (JIT) inventory system is a strategic approach to managing raw materials. It aims to synchronize material orders with production schedules, ensuring materials arrive only when needed. This minimizes waste and storage costs associated with excess inventory. However, JIT requires accurate demand forecasting to function smoothly. By keeping inventory levels low and production flowing efficiently, JIT fosters a more streamlined operation. Developed by Toyota and also known as the Toyota Production System (TPS), JIT relies heavily on reliable suppliers, high-quality production processes, and minimal equipment downtime. Kanban, a visual scheduling system, is often used in conjunction with JIT to prevent work-in-process (WIP) bottlenecks. Terms like ‘short-cycle manufacturing’ and ‘continuous-flow manufacturing’ are closely associated with the JIT philosophy.
