Climate Change and Nonprofit Adaptation : Recognizing the Impacts of A Changing Environment

Climate change has been a topic of discussion within California for many years, and its impacts are often considered in the public and private sectors, as well as the academic literature. While many nonprofit organizations are leading efforts to reverse or mitigate the effects of climate change, there is not much known about how all types of nonprofits are addressing climate change within their work. The purpose of this study was to investigate how nonprofit leaders from all nonprofit subsectors (e.g. human services, education, health) were considering and integrating strategies related to climate change within their organizations. The results indicate, that while nonprofit professionals are often concerned about climate change, it appears that if the environment is not a core part of an organization’s mission then it is not considered their immediate problem
