Competency Requirements for Management Faculty- Learning Model Approach

Competence is the cluster of abilities, knowledge and skills that enable the student to act effectively in personal and professional life. In today's complex and dynamic environment it is a challenge for the Management faculty to make the students competent in all spheres of life by playing a role of a professional guide. This role encompasses mentoring, problem solving facilitating and guidance. This article discusses competence-learning model for management students and the role of faculty in each stage. The four stages of Competence Learning Model are unconscious incompetence, conscious incompetence, conscious competence and unconscious competence. Unconscious Incompetence implies ‘ignorance about the unawareness. At this stage faculty can play the role of a mentor by designing a suitable teaching pedagogy and helping the students resolve their individual differences. Conscious incompetence refers to ‘awareness about the ignorance'. Faculty's role at this stage is more of a problem solver. In the stage of conscious competence the students are aware about their skills, knowledge and competencies. Faculty needs to take the role of a facilitator at this stage. In the final stage of unconscious competence, students are expected to internalize the skills and knowledge and become proficient in their respective domains. At this stage faculty may take the role of a professional guide by fostering students' self-esteem
