Cultural Change from Entrepreneurship to Intrapreneurship

Many research studies have focused upon the impact ofinnovation and change upon firm management. However, few studies have providedfindings regarding the development of organizational culture. Thus, this studyfocuses upon both entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship, examining the impacton a small firm of merging with a larger corporation. Previous research studies have examined the organizational culture ofentrepreneurial firms, investigating factors including the development of afirm culture, the strength of organizational cultures, and the similarities anddifferences between entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs. To compare and contrastthe entrepreneurial and intrapreneurial cultures, data are collected from theFENIX organization. FENIX was established by an entrepreneur; however, it latermerged with a larger firm and underwent other ownership changes. Data are collected from each corresponding time in FENIX's life cycle tounderstand how the organizational culture of the firm changed according toownership. Interviews, questionnaires, and observations are among the methodsutilized to gather the data.The analyses indicate that, over time,entrepreneurship can develop into intrapreneurship. However, managerialendeavors are needed to achieve these vast cultural changes. The benefits(e.g., entrepreneurial spirit) and drawbacks (e.g., dependence on authority) ofan entrepreneurial management style are discussed. (AKP)
