Dematerialization and sustainable development
Using a new conceptual framework, this study demonstrates that sustainable development depends on two factors: (i) the deintensification of energy and material use|polluter emissions; (ii) appropriate economic growth. We generally emphasize deintensification of energy and material use, or carbon dioxide (CO<INF>2</INF>) and other polluter emissions, but often neglect the control of economic growth.
