The efficacy of exchange rate adjustment as an instrument of economic policy in developing countries has long been the subject of considerable controversy. Indonesia has undertaken two large devaluations in recent years, in November 1978 and in March 1983. The experience of the November 1978 devaluation of the rupiah is examined to throw light on the mechanism of monetary accomodation of the cost-push effects of devaluation
