Developing Smart and Sustainable Waste Management System (SSWMS) in an Academic Institution : A Supply Chain Perspective

This study uses case study method to assess the existing (baseline) waste management system for an academic institution, and proposes a smart and sustainable waste management system (SSWMS) for the case academic institution. The perspective from supply chain management has been used to design for physical flow, information flow and financial flow under SSWMS. Key characteristics of SSWMS include (i) distinct physical flow and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for dry waste and wet waste, (ii) end of the waste management under multiple scenarios, (iii) information flow designed for mobile app based WMS wherein the nodes at different level will be networked to enhance the real-time data sharing and smartly managing the waste through enabling organization structure, SOPs and responsibility centers within SSWMS. The proposed system is likely to significantly improve the WMS of the campus on all the four global performance indicators dimensions of velocity, variability, visualize and vocalize. The implications of the study on the “Swachh campus mission” of Higher Education Institutions have also been discussed
