A estos rasgos distintivos se debe la particular resiliencia y la amplitud de uso de este tipo de empresa, a la cual, sin embargo, la percepción publica tiende a atribuir escasa importancia y un carácter de transitoriedad. El debate actual que la crisis ha provocado en torno a los límites del capitalismo financiero está cuestionando la condición de marginalidad de la economía cooperativa. En el texto se comparan dos visiones económicas opuestas: la financiera, que se basa únicamente en el crecimiento del capital, y la cooperativa que se propone la búsqueda de un equilibro a dimensiones múltiples, incluyendo la social y la ambiental. Una estrategia económica que quiera responder a los problemas que enfrentaremos en los próximos años - el crecimiento demográfico, la escasez de recursos naturales la nueva migración urbana, la redistribución y la inclusión social - no puede prescindir del cooperativismo, como parte de una nueva visión del desarrollo económico y social. Esta oportunidad requiere que los actores de la economía cooperativa sean innovadores y piensen en su modelo no en términos dogmáticos, sino valorizando su adaptabilidad y su capacidad de gestionar la diversidad. En la empresa cooperativa, de hecho, se refleja la convicción de que las acciones humanas no son dictadas únicamente por los principios del interés individual, ya que las personas actúan según una pluralidad de motivaciones, y también se ven influenciadas por la orientación hacia la reciprocidad y la búsqueda de justicia y equidad. An early assessment of the results of the International Year of Cooperatives suggests how plural, widespread and long-lived the different forms of the cooperative economy are; hence, the particular resilience and breadth of use of this form of enterprise. The global crisis has generated a debate around the limits of financial capitalism and is actually questioning the condition of marginality that has been traditionally attributed to the cooperative economy. This paper focuses on two divergent economic visions: on the one hand, the financial economy focused on the capital growth; and on the other hand, the cooperative economy, which instead emphasizes the need of establishing a balance between multiple dimensions, including the social and environmental ones. An approach to economics willing to address the critical issues that we will have to face in the upcoming years - population growth, scarcity of natural resources, new urban migration, redistribution of income and social inclusion - cannot disregard cooperatives, as a part of a new vision of economic and social development. In order to seize this opportunity, the agents involved in the cooperative economy should be innovative and develop their model in a non-dogmatic way, enhancing the adaptability of this organizational form and the ability to manage their diversity. Cooperative enterprises, indeed, reflect the belief that human actions are not driven only by the pursuit of self-interest, but by a variety of motivating forces, amongst them the sense of reciprocity and the search for justice and fairness
