Employee voice at work

This chapter presents an overview of employee voice, defined as having a say at work. It begins by tracing the evolution, meaning and thematic focus of employee voice research and the changing voice landscape. It then outlines key themes for a future research agenda. The chapter shows that: (1) there is a comprehensive scholarship trajectory that has provided the critical foundations for the way we understand employee voice, its purpose, its actors and its outcomes; (2) as the landscape of work and employment continues to evolve, changing forms of employee voice continue to emerge and are being re-configured in response to the societal, technological, and generational changes that impact workers and workplaces; and (3) in line with the previous points, and to advance employee voice scholarship, it is important to thematically map new relationships between employee voice, context and actors, and also embrace disciplinary and methodological plurality.
