Evidence on the Multidimensional Performance of Agroecology in Mali Using Tape

In 2019, FAO launched the Tool for Agroecology Performance Evaluation (TAPE). The objective of TAPE is to produce global and harmonized evidence on the multidimensional performance of agroecology and its potential to contribute to sustainable food systems and the achievement of the SDGs. In this paper, we present the results of the application of TAPE in 233 farms in the region of Kayes, in western Mali.Results of TAPE’s Step 1 provide a description of the different types of producers found in the area and a characterization of their level of agroecological transition using the 10 Elements of Agroecology. Results of TAPE’s Step 2 provide an assessment of their performance across the economic, environmental, and social dimensions of sustainability.By combining these results, this paper shows how agricultural systems in the region are at very different levels of agroecological transition, but more advanced agroecological farms perform better in economic, environmental, and social terms
