Explaining Why Structural Transformation Did Not Occur in Cote D'Ivoire

The objective of this paper was to contribute to a better understanding of Cote d'Ivoire's economic performance since independence in terms of structural transformation and propose ways that could trigger effective structural transformation. After a review of the country's economic performance and an assessment of whether structural transformation had happen in light of the path taken by selected emerging Asian countries, it is argued that structural transformation has not really taken place in Cote d'Ivoire despite several economic policies that the country adopted. The paper identified factors that contributed to the emergence of selected Asian countries that have not been developed significantly in Cote d'Ivoire. It is then suggested that the country adopts an integrated development approach as laid in the concept of The Common Good which puts emphasis on lifelong intelligent human capital development (encompassing lifelong civic education, lifelong civic service and lifelong skills development) as the key to trigger other aspects of the socio-economic development
