Fair Value or Historical Cost Accounting : Also a Question of the Appropriate Representation of Risk (Fair Value oder Anschaffungskosten: Auch eine Frage der angemessenen Abbildung von Risiken in der Rechnungslegung)

English Abstract: We evaluate the impact of various accounting frameworks on the informational con-tent of accounting statements regarding the economic situation and risk for transactions resulting from a transformation of maturities or risk, common for financial institutions. We find in our model context that full fair value accounting frameworks possess some favorable properties when estimating returns or risk based on entries of the income statement. Whereas historical cost accounting only provides reliable in-formation on risk for scenarios with no maturity transformation, full fair value ac-counting also provides proper information when maturity transformations have been modeled. Additionally allowing for transformations of risk, conceals, also for full fair value accounting, the risk from maturity transformations.German Abstract: Gegenstand des Beitrags ist die Frage, welche Rechnungslegungsregeln die Risiken aus der Fristen- und Risikotransformation im Jahresabschluss von Finanzintermediä-ren angemessen abbilden. Die Auswertungen zeigen einen Vorteil einer Fair Value-Bilanzierung, wenn Renditen oder Risiko aus Daten der Gewinn- und Verlustrech-nung geschätzt werden. Das Anschaffungskostenmodell liefert nur dann verlässliche Informationen, wenn eine fristenkongruente Finanzierung besteht. Sollen bei einer nicht fristenkongruenten Finanzierung die Risiken und Chancen im Rahmen der Rechnungslegung aufgezeigt werden, ist das Fair Value- Modell sachgerecht. Verän-dern sich die Ausfallrisiken, werden bei einer Fair Value-Bilanzierung die Risiken aus der Fristentransformation überlagert
