The Haryana State has been carved out of the erstwhile Punjab State and came into existence on November 1, 1966. Since then Haryana Govt. has taken a number of steps for the welfare of various sections of society. The Social Justice & Empowerment Department is implementing a number of schemes for the care, protection and rehabilitation of socially under privileged. At present, the Department is implementing a number of schemes for the welfare of senior citizens, orphan/ destitute children, widows, mentally retarded children, the blind, deaf & dumb, minority communities, Kashmiri migrants, dwarfs & eunuchs in the state. Besides, the welfare of vulnerable groups of the society, the Department is also providing social security and economical assistance to the senior citizens, widows and handicapped of the State in the form of monthly pension who are unable to sustain themselves from their own resources and are in need of financial assistance. The majority of which includes pension schemes, handicapped welfare, child welfare, women welfare, aged welfare, drug abuse prevention, grant-in-aid, Ladli Social Security Allowance scheme, Rajiv Gandhi Pariwar Bima Yojna, National Social Assistance Programme, National Family Benefit scheme, National Old Age Pension scheme, Haryana allowance to dwarfs, Haryana allowance to eunuchs and minority welfare. Directorate is monitoring all the schemes run in the state and takes care of its financial & physical matters along with the redressal of the grievances of the beneficiaries. This paper attempts to outline the major initiatives taken by Haryana Govt. for the welfare of society
