This article brings up to date an analysis of the financial experience of the welfare and retirement fund for organized workers in the bituminous coal industry. The experience illustrates some of the difficulties that may be encountered in maintaining the solvency of a benefit program which is not actuarially funded, as well as showing the interrelationship of welfare financing and the economics of the coal industry.
