Gendered Perspectives on Estrangement

Current perceptions on general issues arise as a result of both logic and rhetoric, with logic focusing on proof and rhetoric on persuasion. Arguably, rhetoric plays the larger part. Traditionally, rhetoric related to individual disputes, or 'micro' issues. Modern analyses have focused on 'macro' aspects, whereby the views of large numbers of people are influenced. This paper briefly outlines some common approaches to persuasion. It then discusses two areas of distorted perceptions linked to gender issues, namely time use and unpaid work, and domestic violence. Other examples are mentioned. The consequences of such distortions are then considered, with particular emphasis on New Zealand's family law for relationship property and other areas. This is placed in a wider policy context, considering signals, incentives and behavioural responses
