The purpose of the article is to explore the role of Russian goods on the world market in conditions when political decisions are being made to restrict trade. The source of the statistics was the World Trade Center trading map. Russia's exports were analyzed in terms of export diversification, revealed comparative advantage and trade intensity. Exports of the Russian Federation are not diversified when compared to Germany and China. The growth of diversification was noticeable before the Crimean political crisis, and subsequently the upward trend re-emerged. Trade with the three main trading partners is not intense. Export of wheat is essential for African countries. The low cost of gas and the availability of raw materials give Russian producers competitiveness in the production of nitrogen fertilizers. The revealed comparative advantage of Russia for gold is 2.31, crude oil - 6.2, natural gas - 1.78. According to the dynamics of gas exports, it was noted that the impact of trade sanctions tends to fade. For 2020, the country had a leading position in the export of wheat, asbestos, tungsten ores, coal, oil products, bituminous mixtures, raw chromium, cast iron, palladium, raw nickel, industrial rough diamonds, boards, roundwood, plywood, nuclear reactors. With regard to counter-sanctions, it is noted that GATT Art. XI prohibits quantitative restrictions on exports, whether in the form of quotas, licenses or prohibitions.
