High Performance Work Systems – A Bibliometric Analysis

This paper aims to give a comprehensive overview by exploring the research breadth in the area of emerging High-Performance Work Systems (HPWS) research with special reference to the ‘service’ context by reviewing the existing literature using a bibliometric approach. A portfolio of 149 articles was extracted from the Web of Science (WoS) database and bibliometric techniques such as sources and citation analysis, country publication analysis, keywords analysis were used to analyze the extracted research articles. The extracted 149 documents are from 56 sources published between 2004 and 2021 with 12.93% annual growth rate in publications. There is a rise in HPWS service context studies after the year 2016, whereas the highest number of articles were published in the year 2018. China is the most productive country (30 articles), the USA has the second-highest number (26 articles) followed by Australia, Spain and United Kingdom placed in 3rd, 4th and 5th positions with 15, 12, 12 articles respectively. Moreover, it is found that majority of the HPWS research in the service context is confined to certain geographic locations, to certain authors, to a few service industries and need to be expanded to other contexts
