After the tanks rolled into Czechoslovakia in 1968, academics and writers considered by the regime to be anti‐Soviet were forced to seek manual jobs. When many opted for window cleaning, a joke had it that some academics could not find work because they had not published enough papers. It is a telling comment on the importance of research.
