Purpose This paper aims to review the latest management developments across the globe and pinpoint practical implications from cutting-edge research and case studies. Design/methodology/approach This briefing is prepared by an independent writer who adds their own impartial comments and places the articles in context. Findings Results show that to get the most out of a competitive strategy based on quality differentiation, HRM system objectives and capabilities must be focused on quality. In the same way, a competitive strategy based on innovation differentiation requires HRM system objectives and capabilities focused on flexibility to achieve the maximum impact on performance. In this second case, alignment is fundamental in low dynamic environments.
