Human Resource Development in Economic Development of India : A Case of Education

Human Resource Development plays a crucial and pivotal role in economic development. Human resource development facilitates inclusive growth as well as growth with equity and justice along with sustainable development. Hence it enhances the welfare of the people. India has rich natural resources and also is the home of more than 121 crores of people. The utilization of resources efficiently and sustainably for India’s growth depends on human resources. The human development report (1990) defined human development as the process of enlarging people’s choices. The United Nations (2014) defines Human Resource Development as ‘empowering people by fostering the contributory capacities that they can bring to the improvement of their own quality of life and that of their families, communities, enterprises and societies’. Harbison (1962) opines that ‘human resource development refers to the process of acquiring and increasing the number of persons who have the skills, education and experience which are critical for the economic and the political development of the country. Hence Human capital formation is thus associated with an investment in man and his development as a creative and productive resource. From the definitions discussed, human resource development can be referred to the development of abilities and skills among the population of the country so that it enlarges ppeople’s choice and thereby the quality of life
