Innovative process technology for ingot casting by application of simulation and measuring techniques (IPTINGOT) : final report

The overall object of the project was to use modern technologies and methods to develop the ingot casting process to achieve today's requirements concerning highest steel cleanness in a way so the amount of inclusions generated from steel making and the casting process can be reduced to a minimum. Hereunder four sub objectives has been identified and studied separately: 1. Optimisation of mould filling: Numeric modelling has been made for moulds from all three steel works; Buderus, Gerdau and Uddeholm. Water modelling has been done for Buderus 100 tons ingot at a 1:2 scale and validation made at Buderus and Uddeholm. Recommendations for best praxis worked out. 2. Optimisation of mould powder composition: This has been made with mapping of today's powders, slag sampling, thermodynamic calculations followed by development, manufacturing and test of new compositions for powder and board, validated at all three steel works. 3. Optimisation of hot top: Modelling has been done for all steel works and validation made for Buderus. Recommendations for best praxis worked out. 4. Development of new technique for mould powder addition: Equipment for continuous powder addition developed, manufactured and tested at Uddeholm.
