ITS Standards in the Context of Transportation and Telecommunication Infrastructure.
Product standards have become increasingly important due to increased technological complexity. A barrier to implementing intelligent transportation systems (ITS) technologies has been the development of compatible products and systems. Telecommunications infrastructure has been considered one of the core elements of ITS. Relevant communications options include wireline, wireless and dedicated short-range communication systems. This paper presents a case study on the emerging ITS industry, focusing on the communications aspect of the industry, and the complexity of the standardization process in the context of modern, interdependent technologies.
