Judging Suharto

Will history treat Suharto kindly? Certainly many of his countrymen today do not. But the pendulum of condemnation has swung too far, and Suhartoâ€™s death last week should be the impetus for a reappraisal of his legacy. While it is right for the unsavory aspects of the â€œNew Orderâ€ government to be remembered, the positive contributions of the man who made Indonesia a respected member of the international community deserve at least equal emphasis.
