Managing performance for improved productivity : The importance of performance management analysis

Purpose – Presents an overview of the importance of performance management analysis (PMA) in ensuring the value and success of performance management systems. Design/methodology/approach – The author discusses the importance of PMA and the main elements and structure of the PMA which need to be in place. He relates the ideas discussed to a Dutch municipality which was undergoing rapid growth and change and urgently need to review its performance management systems. Findings – If it receives buy‐in and support from across the organization, the PMA is a key tool in ensuring the ongoing success of performance management systems. Originality/value – Provides clear, tangible evidence, through the use of a practical case study as to the importance of the PMA.
