Mango Farmer's Perception of Climate Change and its Impacts on Mango Pests and Diseases Occurrences in Côte D'Ivoire
Many countries have attributed the decline in agricultural productivity, leading to decreased national and household food security, as a direct effect of climate change. The main objective of this study was to assess mango farmers' perception of climate change and the link between climate change and mango pests and disease occurrences. Surveys were conducted with 402 mango farmers from three regions of Côte d'Ivoire through face-to-face interviews with a structured questionnaire. Data obtained were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics such as frequency, percentage and multinomial logit regressions with SPSS Version 22.0 and R software Version 4.1.2. This study revealed that 94% of mango farmers were aware of climate change. They perceived an increase in temperature (78.4%), a decrease in rainfall (90%) and a decrease in rainy days (90%). Also, farmers have indicated that climate change has increased mango pests (stem borers, fruit flies, and termites), diseases (anthracnose, bacterial blight, dieback, scab) and disturbed mango production parameters (growth, flowering, fruiting). The region, education level of farmers, the presence of pests (caterpillars, stem borers, ant of flowers, termites, weevils), disease (mango soft-nose, dieback, bacteriosis, anthracnose, fruit rot) and disturbance of flowering (poor and early flowering) in orchards, were explanatory variables witch influenced mango farmers' perceptions on the relationship between climate change and pest and disease occurrences (P < 0.01). This research highlighted a lack of knowledge about the appropriate adaptation strategies to climate change. Moreover, most farmers (89%) do not adopt any strategy to fight against climate change impact in mango orchards. Therefore, policymakers should train farmers about adaptive strategies to mitigate the impact of climate change
