Migrations and Regional Convergence: The Case of Spain

This paper analyses the determinants of migrations and the relation between them and the process of regional convergence of per capita income in Spain during the period 1995–2002. In a first stage we analyse the factors influencing interregional migration. Subsequently, we examine the convergence process and the role played by migratory flows in it. The main conclusion we come to is that emigrants tend to move to regions with high per capita income and, consequently, migratory flows have added to the slow process of regional convergence that has taken place in Spain in recent years.
