Myth of Sharing Economy in Indonesia Gig Work Platform

Mainstream arguments refer to gig work platforms such as ride-hailing, online taxis, and home-sharing as sharing economy platforms. However, this designation is philosophically just a paradox because there is no “true sharing economy” in the gig work platform business model. This paper elaborate the myth of sharing economy by using case studies on food delivery, transportation and goods delivery platforms in Indonesia. The finding shows that those platform companies are often referred to as implementing the sharing economy model, but in reality, the sharing economy concept is not really implemented, because the process of work regulation and distribution of economic results is controlled unilaterally by the platform company. The sharing economy model is not artificially created because it only takes some of the characteristics of the sharing economy and combines it with other economic models so that the distribution is only on risks and costs, but not on income
