Nationwide drives change through its apprenticeship program : Vehicle repairer bids to ensure good technical knowledge across the business
Purpose – The paper aims to detail how UK automotive‐repair group Nationwide is reforming its apprenticeships to improve the retention rates of trainees during and after the program. Design/methodology/approach – The paper explains the reasons for the changes, the form they will take and the results they are expected to achieve. Findings – The paper describes the new Nationwide Apprenticeship Academy, which will include: work‐based learning under the guidance of a mentor and the site manager; off‐job technical training; and participation in the Nationwide Challenge – a four‐day residential course designed to inspire team‐building, provide an understanding of the workplace, improve communication and problem‐solving skills, boost self‐confidence and promote the attitudes and work ethic that are important to Nationwide. Practical implications – The paper reveals that, as automotive repair becomes more complex, and as the company's business model becomes more sophisticated to meet customer requirements, it needs to ensure a virtuous circle of quality selection, skill and career development. Social implications – The paper highlights a thriving apprenticeship program that can help to make inroads into youth unemployment. Originality/value – The paper gives the inside story of changes to an apprenticeship program.
