The coupling of European balancing markets is the latest step towards the European internal electricity market. From mid-2022 onwards, beside imbalance-netting, also the activation of the automated frequency restoration reserves (aFRR) has been increasingly integrated between European TSOs in the so-called PICASSO framework.
