Origins, sustainability and lessons from Thailand's economic growth

Since the early 1980s, Malaysia, Thailand and, to a lesser extent, Indonesia have experienced a process of rapid industrialization and associated economic and social change. Rapid economic development in these countries has been associated with deregulation, liberalization and a reduction in the economic activities of the state. For Thailand, in particular, these developments have been presented as a new "model of development". Through a review of Thailand's own recent rapid economic growth, the author examines the validity and implications of the deregulation aspect of the recent development of the three ASEAN economies.
