Perceptions of Teacher Educators to Alternative Approaches of Grievance Handling by Lecturers of Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria

This study investigated the perceptions of teacher educators to the use of strikes by teachers’ unions like the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the alternatives to this in grievance handling by lecturers of tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The population of the study is all lecturers of the Federal College of Education Gusau (a total of 73) from whom forty (40) lecturers were used as the sample. Data were collected using a scaled questionnaire and were analysed using means and standard deviations. The study found, among other things, that the respondents held the opinion that strikes were not yielding any positive results in bringing about the needed fundamental reforms in Nigerian tertiary institutions. The respondents also believed that there were alternative approaches to grievance handling that lecturers of tertiary institutions can use. The study made recommendations relevant to these findings
