PILE 'EM HIGH : A GUIDE TO HIGH STACKING WAREHOUSE DESIGN
One does not have to look very far to find the reason for development of the high stacking warehouse. The cost/unit volume of building envelope reduces significantly with height and any reduction in plan area is a further cost benefit. There are many factors to consider in a simple pallet storage operation and many pitfalls for the unwary. Such physical aspects as pallet condition and type, load instability, variation in size and load overhang, stock levels, order size, picking procedures, re‐order levels and through‐put. All this before the fire officer and factory inspector have thrown in the usual number of justifiable spanners and before you get to the insurance company! This paper was originally presented at a High Stacking Conference organised by SHD and held in London recently.
