Policies to Conserve Forests in Assam : A Historical Analysis

The forest conservation policies have been trying to reconcile the conflicting objectives of exploiting forests for economic development, ecological balance and livelihoods and rights of people dependent on forests. Along with the national forest policies, state government of Assam also introduced some of its own forest policies taking into account the local requirement of forests. In this paper, it has been tried to analyze historically the different forest policies adopted in the state government of Assam
