Positive and Negative Aspects of Cultural Heritage Tourism: An Insight Story

Tourism is booming around the world; Culture & heritage plays an important role in attracting millions of tourists to different destinations across the world. Cultural heritage tourism offers an opportunity to tourists to experience and understand different cultures in depth. Cultural Heritage tourism accounts for more than 40% of global international tourist arrivals. However, Cultural heritage tourism has both positives and negatives attached with it. The present chapter systematically reviews the existing literature with the aim to explain cultural heritage as an important component for tourism growth and also explain the concept of cultural heritage tourism and its components. This chapter identifies various positive & negative socio-cultural and economical aspects of cultural heritage tourism as well as how technology has helped destinations to increase tourist engagement, awareness and enhancing their experiences at the destination. The chapter also explains how cultural heritage can be used as a tourism product.
