Proceedings of the fullspectrum and solar electricity joint scientific workshop on the utilization of the solar spectrum

The rate of growth of the worldwide photovoltaic solar energy market in recent years (>30% per year) can be compared only with the growth in some sectors of informatics and mobile communications. The presentations contained in these Proceedings address the recent developments and research efforts to develop the future technologies for photovoltaic solar energy conversion. It brings together leading scientists from diverse fields to contribute to the debate on where the future will take us in terms of materials and concepts for the mid to long term future. The contributed articles approach the topic by first setting out the amazing achievements being made using existing technologies and concepts in the area of concentration and multi junction structures, outlining the current status of two of the more publicised routes, quantum dots and intermediate band materials. The articles then lead into the diverse fabrication ideas for competing concepts from the latest work on the all-silicon multi junction solar cell, to hot carrier options in increased conversion efficiencies, and organic materials for electron up/down conversion. The competing concept of ultra low cost polymer or plastic solar cells is also covered, and finally perspectives from a leading photovoltaic manufacturer on what are the challenges which all of these new material concepts present to the future solar industries. In conclusion, this work presents a comprehensive view of the main routes which are being explored to reach a future generation of photovoltaic solar technologies and devices.
