Publication Records of Australian Accounting and Finance Faculty Promoted to Full Professor, Set within an International Context

This study investigates the publication profiles of 147 accounting and finance faculty promoted to full professor at Australian universities over the 1978-2014 period. Professors required a median 15 papers in ABDC-listed journals, with 7 at the highest A*/A quality levels for promotion. Promotees were typically 44 years old, with 14 years academic experience including 9 years post-PhD. Neither gender nor internal/external factors seemed to affect promotion requirements. Finance professors typically had more publications at the time of promotion than accounting staff, though not at the higher quality levels. Accounting promotees had greater academic experience than finance, but a shorter period post-PhD. Female promotees were typically older than males. More-research intensive universities expect a higher number of ‘quality' research publications; less-research intensive universities may partially substitute volume for quality. Both the volume and quality of pre-promotion publications have increased over time. Differing country norms in promotion decisions have potential implications for further internationalisation
