Pyrolytic Fuel from Plastic Waste : Production, Characterization and Combustion Performance of an Si Engine Fueled by Gasoline Blends

The total amount of plastic waste is increasing every year. However, most plastics cannot rapidly degrade in a landfill and thus, become a major waste in garbage. Moreover, it is not environmentally friendly to dispose plastic waste by incineration, which leads to carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions even though incineration can generate energy. Another effort to utilize plastic waste, which seems to be promising, is the pyrolysis of plastic waste, resulting in a mixture of hydrocarbons of heavy oils and olefins. In the present investigation, fuel is prepared from the waste plastic through the pyrolysis process and blended with the gasoline to use in the SI engine in different proportions. The combustion performance of the engine fueled by the prepared blend is investigated for variable engine speed and at different load conditions in terms of brake thermal efficiency, exhaust gas temperature and Cylinder Pressure. The experimental results showed an increment in the brake thermal efficiency for 5% blend of fuel from plastic waste at the 30%, 50% and 90% engine load conditions.
