Recovery from Plant Level Supply Chain Disruptions : Supply Chain Complexity and Business Continuity Management

This study examines the role of internal and external supply chain complexity factors on a plant’s ability to recover from supply chain disruptions at the manufacturing plant level. We also examine the role of the strategic, operational, and supplier orientation of business continuity management (BCM) plans on the recovery time of focal plants. Several important findings reveal that internal and external complexity in the form of parts, internal processes, number of supply chains, and echelon proximity increase the recovery time. We also find strong empirical support that comprehensive BCM plans improves recovery time. In addition, we found a diminishing effect of complexity on the recovery time and a lessened impact of complexity in the presence of a comprehensive BCM plan
