Reexamining the Added Worker Effect

Panel data with a short recall period are used to examine the effect of a husband's loss of employment on his wife's entry into the labor force. A significant contemporaneous added worker effect is found, although as much as 75% of the added worker effect suggested by descriptive statistics is seen to reflect sample heterogeneity
